AI has undeniably transformed numerous aspects of our lives, including the world of music. There have been numerous songs that have featured an artist that has passed, and this has led to a lot of questions about copyright laws. In fact, on famous AI Youtube channel has already been shut down for this. Now, we are seeing a song showcasing Kurt Cobain’s “involvement” in Green Day’s iconic song “American Idiot” through AI and let’s just say it’s a different take.
Kurt Cobain, the legendary frontman of Nirvana, left an indelible mark on the music industry and countless lives with his raw talent. The use of AI to mimic Cobain’s vocal style and integrate his “contributions” into a Green Day song is a total trip. It was said that Cobain was a fan of Green Day when they were first coming up, so I suppose this collaboration could make total sense in another world, but this is total pop and I’m unsure if Cobain would appreciate that direction.
In one part of the song, it features a Cobain scream which sounds directly pulled out of ‘Drain You,’ by Nirvana as well.
On one hand, this collaboration may be viewed as a tribute to Cobain’s influence and a way to keep his musical legacy alive. It allows newer generations to experience a musical union that would have been otherwise impossible.
In an era of unprecedented technological capabilities, we must navigate the uncharted territory of AI in art with caution and ethical considerations. Rather than relying solely on AI to simulate collaborations, artists should explore new creative avenues that respect the boundaries and authenticity of their craft. This approach allows for innovation while maintaining the essence of artistic expression.
Grimes has spoken out about all of this previously and they’re welcoming it with open arms as long as they get their cut. Is this advancement good or bad?
