System of a Down singer Serj Tankian has shed light on the reasons behind his decision to stop touring, emphasizing that it goes beyond health issues. While acknowledging that some of his health concerns have improved since undergoing back surgery in 2021, Tankian clarified that his decision was also influenced by lifestyle considerations.
In an interview with Revolver, Tankian stated that cutting down on touring was “a lifestyle decision based on family and vision.” He highlighted that after more than 20 years of on-and-off touring, he felt the need to prioritize other aspects of his life, including spending time with his family.
“Some of my back stuff is a lot better, in terms of health, which is cool. I have some other things I’m dealing with right now, which may or may not be affected by travel or touring.”
Tankian expressed that while touring is enjoyable and brings happiness to many, it’s not the top priority in his life. Family has become a focal point for the System of a Down frontman, especially with the birth of his son, who is now nine years old. Tankian emphasized that touring not only impacted his health but also strained his relationship with his family.
“It wasn’t just a health-related decision as far as cutting down on touring, but also a lifestyle decision. Based on family and vision.
“I’ve been touring for 20-something years, on and off, of course. Not every year. And it’s fun, it’s profitable, it makes a lot of people happy in terms of being out there and sharing the music and [seeing] the reaction, and people really enjoying it and getting that feedback. But after years of doing it and the travel that’s involved, it’s one of those things where it’s not the top priority on my list in life.”
The rocker made it clear that he is not planning an imminent return to performing and is currently focusing on himself and his family. This decision reflects a shift in priorities, with family taking precedence over the demands and challenges of a music career that involves extensive touring.
