In a recent interview with Daily Beast, Amy Lee, the lead singer of Evanescence, looked back on the band’s unexpected win for “Best New Artist” at the 2004 Grammy Awards. The victory came as a surprise, as they beat out the heavily favored 50 Cent, who had released the massively successful “Get Rich Or Die Tryin'” the previous year. Lee revealed that 50 Cent harbors ill feelings towards her, stemming from that night.
50 Cent hates my guts,” Lee told the Daily Beast. “It’s just one of those things… I mean, truthfully, we thought he was going to win too. It was such a wild night. People are like, ‘What was it like to win a Grammy?’ and I’m like, ‘Stressful!’ I mean, it’s wonderful now, to have them, but it was surreal… I just remember thinking, ‘I don’t even think anybody in this room knows who we are.'”
Reflecting on the event, Lee shared her memories of the Grammy win and the subsequent appearance of 50 Cent on stage during their acceptance speech. Despite their success, Lee expressed the stress and surreal nature of the evening, noting:
“I just remember thinking, ‘I don’t even think anybody in this room knows who we are.'”
The unexpected appearance of 50 Cent on stage during their acceptance speech added to the intensity of the moment. Lee, while watching the rapper walk on stage, admitted to feeling baffled and unsure of what was happening. She described the incident as not that bad, emphasizing that 50 Cent didn’t grab the mic or say anything but made his presence felt.
Although the rapper never personally communicated with Lee after the incident, she revealed that he has spoken about her in interviews, claiming he was robbed. Lee downplayed any potential beef, stating, “I don’t want to start a beef with him.”
Recalling the moment earlier this year in an interview with Metal Hammer, Lee admitted to being sureprised by their win and felt like a “dark horse” against 50 Cent. She vividly remembered her uncertainty, saying:
“I felt like, ‘People don’t know who I am’… I’m a 21-, 22-year-old kid, trying to dress up like a grown-up.”
Despite the unexpected nature of their Grammy win and the subsequent 50 Cent incident, Evanescence has continued to make significant contributions to the music industry over the years.
